How to make 3D models of thoughts using Knex
This guide shows you how to attach associations to Play’Doh models of thoughts using Knex.
You will need
- Modelling clay – If you use Fimo and bake it you can reuse your shapes, but Play Doh and Plastercine work well too.
- A selection of K’nex rods & circular connectors
- Blu-tac
- Paper
- Scissors
- Pens
Creating a thought shape.
If you haven’t already, make a shape to describe a thought, click here for a how to guide.
Consider a thought, feeling, memory, dream or plan and think about it as you squeeze the modelling clay in your hand. Sculpt it into a shape to describe that thought. There is no one way of doing this, just make the shape that feels right to you.
Make a very simple drawing, or write short description of this thought on a small piece of paper, card or plastic and stick it on your thought shape. Earlier I was feeling a bit sad and thinking “I want to go home.” so I made this shape and wrote that.
Adding Connections
Now we will add extra associations to the thought to describe it and how it relates to other thoughts.
Take a K’nex rod and connect it to a circular connector.
Cut out a paper shape, about the same size as the circular connector and make a drawing or write a few words to describe the other thought, blu tac it onto the circular connector.
Think about what metaphors you could use to describe or label this thought.
What is this thought like? What other words or pictures could you use to describe it.
What kind of thought is it, what does this thought do?
How would you label this thought?
Which other thoughts are associated to with this one?
